The pulp and paper industry is active in finding out sustainable ways to add new features - even intelligence - to paper.

Scientific and technological findings contribute to a number of issues which are essential for the competitiveness of papermaking; e.g. production efficiency as well as utilization of new fast-renewing raw materials.

Forest-Based Sector Technology Platform (FTP)

  • Description: The European forest-based sector plays a key role in a sustainable society. It comprises a competitive, knowledge-based industry that fosters the extended use of renewable resources. It strives to ensure its societal contribution in the context of a bio-based, customer-driven and globally competitive European economy.
    In 2004, the European Confederation of Woodworking Industries (CEI-Bois), the Confederation of European Forest Owners (CEPF) and the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) took the initiative to set up a Technology Platform for the forest-based sector. This platform aims at defining and implementing the sector’s R&D roadmap for the future and is supported by a wide range of stakeholders. The Forest-Based Sector Technology Platform is an industry-driven process, embedded in industry reality, and supporting the sector’s strategy.

The Finnish Forest Cluster Research Portal

  • Description: The Finnish Forest Cluster Research Portal is designed to help researchers in Finland and abroad to prepare for the implementation of the Finnish National Research Agenda (NRA). On the portal based on Wiki technology, research groups can solicit their competencies, post research ideas, and plan projects. Help is provided by facilitators who will put forward research needs derived from the research agenda and the subsequent programs. The programs will be launched by a national Strategic Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation of the Forest Cluster.


J-FOR - The Journal of Science & Technology for Forest Products and Processes

  • Description: J-FOR is a preeminent and flagship journal of PAPTAC, publishing peer-reviewed high-quality articles that address technological and scientific issues critical to the forest industry. J-FOR emphasizes a unique balance between papers in traditional technology areas and those in emerging technology areas as our industry transforms to new business models. J-FOR is published on a bi-monthly basis and distributed in printed format to corporate subscribers and libraries in over 30 countries. There are no page charges for authors.
